Longtime volunteer and former president Andy Bunn ’86 was awarded the 2022 “O” in Life Award by Punahou Alumni Association (PAA) at a luncheon on May 11. The award honors individuals who exemplify the ideal of service to Punahou and the community. It is the highest honor given by PAA.
Bunn first began participating with PAA as a student at Williams College in Massachusetts in the late ’80s and has been a member on his Class Reunion committee since their fifth reunion.
In 2008, Bunn joined the board of the Punahou Alumni Association, and he served as president in 2015 – 16 when the School celebrated its 175th anniversary. During that special year, Bunn, an attorney, traveled more than 50,000 miles to the mainland and Japan to attend events and meetings celebrating Punahou.
But his transformational work to restructure PAA is perhaps his biggest legacy. “I believe the most meaningful adventure has been to be involved in the remodeling of our alumni association – to transform it into a college model alumni association with our (regional) chapters in order to reach more than 30,000 alumni all over the world,” said Bunn during remarks at the luncheon. “It’s allowed me to work so closely with our local board members, our wonderful staff, as well as hundreds of alumni throughout the world.”
Bunn was celebrated by PAA board members, past “O” in Life recipients, Punahou trustees and staff, as well as classmates President Mike Latham ’86, Paul Chattergy ’86 and Lyle Fujikawa ’86. He was also joined by his parents, wife Dr. Miki Yazawa ’87 Bunn and family members.
Beyond his service to Punahou and the PAA, Bunn is the executive director of Hawaii Conference Foundation, an organization dedicated to faithfully stewarding the assets of the Hawai‘i Conference of the United Church of Christ through investment and property management. He is a former board member and president of the Pacific Club and currently serves on the board of the Retirement Housing Foundation, Craigside Retirement Residence and the United Church Insurance Association. Bunn is the proud father of two Punahou alumni, Chris ’14 and Anna ’19.
